Limited edition vs standard: how much more boutique horror limiteds cost in 2026

We paired limited and standard editions of the same horror Blu-rays and 4Ks at the same shop. The typical gap is £12 to £15 at UK labels and $17 to $20 at Diabolik. Here is what the extra money buys.

Most boutique horror releases come in two versions: a limited edition with a box, a book and art cards, and a standard edition with the same film in a plain case. Whether the limited is worth the extra is your call. To put a number on the extra, we looked for every title where the same shop sells both a limited and a standard edition, and compared the cheapest price of each on 20 October 2026.

The gap, shop by shop

ShopPairs foundMedian extra for the limitedRange
Second Sight (UK)13£12£10 to £22
Arrow Films UK17£15varies a lot (sale prices)
Diabolik DVD (US)15$20$7 to $40
Rarewaves (UK)8£34£15 to £40
Eureka (UK)2£20 and £29

Second Sight is the most consistent. Its limited editions sit £10 to £15 above the standard edition almost every time: a limited Blu-ray is usually £27.99 or £29.99 against £17.99 for the standard, and a limited 4K is £36.99 or £39.99 against £24.99.

Rarewaves is the outlier, so compare prices before buying a limited there. It had the Second Sight standard 4Ks at £22.72, cheaper than Second Sight's own store, but some of its limited editions were far above Second Sight's price: Scanners and The Brood limited 4Ks were £63.09 at Rarewaves against £39.99 direct.

What the extra buys: Second Sight

Second Sight prints the limited edition contents on each product page. Three examples from its store:

  • The Devil's Candy, Limited Edition 4K UHD & Blu-ray (£39.99, standard 4K £24.99): a rigid slipcase with new artwork by Huan Do, a 120-page book with new essays, and 6 collector's art cards. The limited is also a dual-format set with the Blu-ray included.
  • Pearl, Limited Edition 4K UHD (£36.99, sold out when we checked; standard £24.99): a rigid slipcase with new artwork by Thinh Dinh, a 120-page book and 6 art cards.
  • The House of the Devil, Limited Edition Blu-ray (£29.99, standard £17.99): a rigid slipcase with new artwork by Nick Charge, a 70-page book plus a behind-the-scenes gallery, and 6 art cards.

So at Second Sight the £12 to £15 buys packaging and print, and on some 4K titles a bundled Blu-ray. The disc extras listed on the limited pages are long, but we haven't compared them line by line with the standard editions, so check both pages if a particular commentary matters to you.

Arrow UK: the sale scrambles the gap

Arrow's gap is harder to read in October, because many standard editions are in the £15 Shocktober tier while the matching limiteds are sold out at their old price. Carrie, Candyman, Crash and The Cat O' Nine Tails all had the standard 4K at £15 and the limited 4K at £30 on Arrow UK. City of the Living Dead was £9 standard and £29.99 limited.

It runs the other way too. The Hellraiser Trilogy limited SteelBook Blu-ray was £17.99 against £40 for the standard set. A lot of Arrow limited editions were sold out when we checked.

US buyers: Diabolik's imports

For US collectors who want a UK limited without ordering from the UK, Diabolik lists both editions for many Second Sight titles. The standard 4K was $29.99 every time, and limited editions ran from $46.99 (Pearl, MaXXXine) to $69.99 (Possession). The median gap across 15 pairs was $20.

The same pattern shows up on Indicator: The Shiver of the Vampires was $34.99 as the UK limited 4K and $27.99 as the US standard 4K.

Eureka and 88 Films

Eureka had two pairs. Martyrs was £19.99 as a standard 4K and £39.99 as a limited 4K and Blu-ray set, and Mabuse Lives! was £25.99 standard and £54.99 as a limited box set.

88 Films is different again. Its Swamp Thing Deluxe Limited Edition (4K UHD and Blu-ray, a website exclusive) was £30 against £24.99 for the standard 4K, only £5 more. Its Species Collection 1-4 was cheaper as a Deluxe Collector's Edition (£25) than as the standard set (£35).

Vinegar Syndrome's version: alternate slipcovers

Vinegar Syndrome doesn't do many limited-vs-standard pairs in the same way. Its equivalent is the alternate slipcover: the same release with a different slipcover, for $3 more. On 4K, The Murder Secret, Bloody Psycho, Massacre and Escape from Death were all $39.99 standard and $42.99 with the alternate slipcover.

So, is the limited worth it?

On our numbers, a limited edition costs roughly half to two-thirds more than the standard at Second Sight. At Arrow it can be anything from less than the standard to double, depending on the sale. If you buy for the film, the standard edition is the better deal almost every time. If you buy for the shelf, the gap at Second Sight is predictable enough to budget for, and the time to buy is before the limited sells out.
