Is it cheaper to buy horror Blu-rays direct from the label? We compared 366 discs

We matched 366 horror Blu-ray and 4K discs sold by both the label and Diabolik or Rarewaves. The retailer was cheaper on 224, usually by about 2 dollars or pounds. Labels won during their own sales.

We matched 366 horror Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs listed both at the label's own store and at a big retailer, Diabolik DVD in the US or Rarewaves in the UK. The retailer was cheaper for 224 of them, the label for 128, and 14 cost the same.

The gaps were small when the retailer won: a median of US$2.01 in the US and £2.01 in the UK. When the label won, it was usually because the label was running a sale, and the median saving went up to US$8.99 and £4.41.

How we compared prices

Scream Shelf reads prices from the public product pages of 12 shops. For this post we used the 2,244 listings we held on 19 and 20 October 2026, covering 1,427 titles from Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, 88 Films, Second Sight, Eureka and Powerhouse (Indicator).

A disc counts when the label's own store and at least one other shop both list it in stock or on pre-order, in the same currency. For each shop we took the cheapest listing of that title. Prices don't include delivery, reward points or multi-buy offers, and our catalog matches discs by title and format, so a few pairs may set a limited edition against a standard one.

The retailer was cheaper more often

Diabolik undercut Severin's US store on 78 of 98 Severin discs, but by a median of US$1.51. Rarewaves beat Second Sight on 52 of 58, by a median of £2.27. Vinegar Syndrome and Diabolik were the closest pair: 13 of the 36 discs cost the same at both, and Diabolik was cheaper on 17.

Label sales flip the result

Bar chart: median saving per disc when the retailer was cheaper and when the label was cheaper, for US and UK shops

Two of the labels were in the middle of a sale when we checked. Arrow's Shocktober sale runs on both of its stores until 2 November, and Arrow's US store was cheaper than Diabolik on 34 of 42 discs, with a median Arrow price of US$17.00 against US$27.99. Powerhouse's sale ends at noon UK time on 28 October, and Powerhouse was cheaper than Rarewaves on all 23 discs we could match.

Arrow UK against Rarewaves was close to even (24 to 28), and Rarewaves was running an Arrow Halloween sale of its own at the same time.

Vinegar Syndrome and Severin US price under their own SRP

On the day we checked, 587 of 590 Vinegar Syndrome listings were priced below the SRP the store shows next to them, with a median of 28% off. Severin's US store showed 207 of 208 below SRP, with a median of 20% off. Vinegar Syndrome's 31 Days of Syntober only discounts one featured film a day, so the other discounts aren't part of that promotion.

The UK labels mostly don't show a crossed-out price. 88 Films, Second Sight and Eureka each had one listing below a crossed-out price.

How many limited editions show as sold out

Bar chart: share of limited editions and of other editions shown as sold out on each label's own store

Of the 98 limited editions still listed on Arrow's UK store, 67 showed as sold out (68%), against 43% of its other listings. Second Sight showed 44 of 106 limited editions sold out and none of its 29 other listings. Severin's US store and 88 Films had no limited edition marked sold out.

These figures only count products still listed on each store. A shop that removes sold-out products will show a lower share. Vinegar Syndrome isn't in the chart because we can't tell its limited editions apart from its standard ones in our data.

What to do with this

In this snapshot the retailer was the better default, and the label's store was worth checking first while the label ran a sale. Every title page on Scream Shelf lists the price at each shop we check, and a price alert emails you when one drops.
